research assistant is a lab tech. you are tasked to aid PhDs in their research. high performing lab techs can be considered to be doing research, but they ought to transition to a PhD if they intend to keep it up.

I'm in charge of collecting data, analyzing the data, and writing the main parts of articles. Obviously I don't get to decide the research topic. Is what I am doing more similar to researchers or lab techs?

Depends on your field, really. I am an RA and my research is for my thesis, I don't work for anyone else (other than my advisor). This is in hardware security though, so there really isn't any "lab" to go to and do menial tasks. It's mostly just writing VHDL and state machines
