It's more about the fact that the amount of energy needed to come to Earth and then mine the material to transport it back to whereever you want it uses more energy than just turning some other element into the element you want. So the Alien could just turn for example Lead into Gold or Nickel into Copper using high energy transmutation. This would be far more efficient in terms of energy use and far quicker.
