I'll start. I have an interview with a foreign professor tomorrow. How likely am I to get the PhD position at this stage? Do anons have any tips for giving a good interview?

I know fundamentally figuring it out is the whole MO of the PhD, but I can't help but feel at a major disadvantage. All I'm handed is past literature and dissertations from earlier students; I haven't the slightest clue how to develop a tangible project from this. It feels like being handed some wood and carpentry screws and then getting told to build a house. Sorry for the rant, It's just that I always assumed the PhD was a means of teaching students how to be better scientists, yet the entire didactic portion of the PhD was just an extension on the didactic teachings of undergrad.

It only gets worse anon. Once you are a postdoc they hire you for your expertise, i.e. they have no fucking clue what you do. At some point you have to convince yourself as well as others that you're not a fraud.

Does that really hold up for every PhD though? My PhD program seems to bring in professors primarily from industry, and we get emails on a near-weekly basis from major pharma industry where people are begging professors from our school to refer new graduates to them. Maybe it's just my program, but it's almost as if just being a student alone has enveloped us within a "network"
