I've found that if I'm opiated and get hit it still hurts but the pain subsides more quickly. Nerve pain is caused by constant signals being sent that never get turned off, so I can see why opioids wouldn't help much. Why that is, I don't know.
I take pregabalin for anxiety and used to be addicted to morphine, for what's it's worth.

I've also heard high doses of morphine can stop the negative feelings coming from pain without stopping the pain itself. Nerve pain is often described more as discomfort and general neuropathy feelings, not outright pain (at least this is true of long term nerve damage, recent nerve damage can be incredibly painful), so again one can see why opioids mightn't help with that.
