You need a lot of math to understand how and why they work but you could go from where you are to being able to understand basic summaries of them in about 1 year if you already know precalculus. The basics of abstract algebra and differential geometry aren't as hard as you think.

Not to dismiss the mathematical value of this stuff, but why would you ever want to learn about such an arbitrary thing?
Obviously to understand string theory, but why would you want to delve into a theory that hasn't made a single verifiable prediction, won't give one in the foreseeable future, and that for all intent and purposes is as falsifiable as Wolfram theory of everything?
