I've tried Landau and Lifshitz before and couldn't get too far; too much of a brainlet back then. I want to try again with a different text though, I heard Soper is another good reference.

Nearly any Dover book in physics is fantastic. Highly recommended. Even mathfags can benefit and learn physics from these.
You didn't ask for it, but I cannot recommend David Bohm's Quantum Mechanics enough. It's so good.
