When you move diagonally in chess, you move sqrt(2) spaces. A chess board is 8x8 spaces, meaning that to go from one corner of the board to another you need to move sqrt(128) spaces, yet physically there are only 8 spaces between each diagonal.

Am I just retarded?

Assuming you're just retarded and not baiting, you're mixing up your metrics. Either you consider a diagonal move in chess to be 1 space in length, in which case the diagonal of the board is 8 spaces long, or you consider a diagonal move to be $\sqrt{2}$ in length, in which case 8 diagonal moves has a total distance of $8\sqrt{2}$ . You're getting confused since you initially defined the diagonal length of a space to be $\sqrt{2}$ , but then saw that there were only 8 spaces on the diagonal and forgot that each of those 8 spaces has a $\sqrt{2}$ length.

The shortest way to a point is straight.
Assume one square is 1 unit length.
Its diagonal is $\sqrt(2)$ .

The chess board is a square 8x8.
Its entire diagonal across the square is still 8*squareroot of 2

The diagonal is indeed longer than the side.

You're using square side length to extrapolate diagonal length which clearly isn't the case.
