Planets don`t have those limitations. There`s water in Mars and in the Moon, that with the sabatier process can give us oxygen and nitrogen, water can be purified for consumption, once enough material is ferried from Earth, colonies can be sustainable, since a planet is not a closed system.
It is hard? yes, it is doable? yes.
It can be done with technology that exists nowadays plus micro nuclear reactors for the colony.
