There wouldn't have been a previous black move. But a puzzle position doesn't have to be legally reachable, does it? You could have chess puzzles where the entire objective is to determine if the position can be reached legally or not

This is a position that is made to be hard for computers on purpose, but obvious to people. White cannot win unless blacklets the c pawn pass, black cannot win unless white captures one of the rooks.

I recall an anecdote about a study that asked participants to memorize the positions of a mid-game chess board, then recreate it from memory. Chess players were naturally better at this than non-chess players. I don't think it's possible. The white king could move to the left if the black king does, and it could capture the black king to avoid the rook if the black king moved to F2. If the bishop moves to G3, the king could just go to the left again.

For the exact reasons I stated - a human player easily sees that black has no chance of checkmating white, unless he moves his pawns. The computers also see these moves are bad, and play correctly, but they think blacks has an dvantage and white is fighting a losing battle.
