Moon is a three day trip from earth. A great launching point for asteroid mining since it's up the gravity well. There is Helium 3 if we ever crack fusion moon just makes more sense.
Mars has no magnetic field so you get dosed by radation.
Its gravity is lower.
Takes months to get to with conventional technology.
Its dust is toxic with perchlorates so any dust that gets brought in is hazardous.
In short mars is a death sentence with no incentive at this point given current technological development.
We should be focusing on the moon and sending robots and probes to mars. there is no reason to send people only to have them die.
