Since Soviet education was destroyed and commercialized it's gradually moving downhill.
But still there are some good researchers and universities. Physics, math, computer science and especially medicine are better than in most parts of the Europe. But nothing phenomenal.
Best students are leaving the country, because eurupean payroll is much better, and old soviet academics are dying one by one. Most of them hate what liberals did to Russia and blame authorities and bourgs.
All I can say to brighten the mood is: 'at least we don't have repression of academic thought and feminism as a dominant ideology. Like you, in Europe, do'.
