Is it possible to make renewable energy out of resources we have in abundance, like air, grass, leaves, dirt, rocks etc? How close are we to this level of science and efficiency?

So... Biomass? That polluting, carbon emitting (230g/kwh), water intensive piece of shit? Yeah, you can make that. But perhaps you should not. (Green waste should be composted, not burned, learned that from a permaculture guy)

Because when there is high amount of energy concentrated in one place it tends to spread out in order to reach equilibrium. For example, when it rains in the mountains the water has high gravitational potential energy and it tends to spread out as rivers in order to reach the ocean. Before it reaches equilibrium (the ocean), you can build a dam in order to convert some of that energy to electrical energy which is the most useful form of energy for humanity in the current age (it used to be steam energy). Once rain water is in the ocean you can no longer do shit with it. You could lift it up yourself, but that requires you to expend your own energy and that's pointless. You can only wait until somethig else does it for you, like the sun through evaporation. Therefore dams basically collect sun energy in the form of kinetic energy of the river. Grass continues to exist because sun continues to blast energy at us and grass is basically locked up sun energy. Yes, you can burn grass in order to release some of that sun energy but that's a shittier way of obtaining it compared to directly collecting the sun energy through solar panels. It's not all about how much energy there is, it's about how easy and efficient it is to convert it into something useful like electrical energy.

He's right for the most part. Charcoal is great for soil and as a store of carbon so burning woody plants for energy or to make charcoal is fine in my opinion. He may have been referring specifically to nitrogen-rich plant waste (green and brown waste in the context of composting) which shouldn't be burned because of the nitrogen compounds it releases.

So the simplest energy source is obviously the sun. But you can extract some deuterium and tritium from seawater and try to run a fusion plant of of it. (if we ever get fusuion power...) One big aspect we often oversee is the heating of buildings, since we heat almost every home with gas. One solution for that is a heat pump. That only works with reasonable efficency when your outside temperature doesn't fall far under 0°C. In that case you can drill a hole and extract the abundance heat from the ground. Just 3-6°C makes a big difference. Pumping heat around is way more efficent than creating it with a medium that you have to move around.
