How does a troop of chimps allow each individual chimp to express their ambition to become a leader without damaging the group?

If in-fighting becomes to severe, then there will be less chimps in the troop and they'll be in danger of being massacred by other troops.

How do they achieve balance between the ambition of the individual and the wellbeing of the troop?
