>>12610348I'm an American and the impression I get is that they don't want you to become a doctor. Yes, it sounds nice to be in such a respectable profession and to be able to help people, but that's about it in terms of benefits. They arbitrarily inflate school length, charge you absurd amounts, make you take the MCAT, have you compete for a slot in medical schools which are more competitive than an Ivy League MBA, put you in a slow paying, slave-labor residency that's competitive to get into. And on top of all that, you'll have not just hundreds of thousands in student loans, but also a decade in opportunity cost from studying instead of working. If you had just gotten an employable bachelors degree and invested in real estate, you'd make more money than he does by the time he's able to actually practice. Oh, and remember that if you fail at a single step of this, you've completely ruined your life and will be condemned to nigh-unemployable wage-slavery. Might as well kys if you fail in medical school after acquiring all that debt. And even when you graduate, you'll be completely burnt out just in time to work 70 hours a week treating perfectly preventable illnesses and pretending that your 400 lb patient is perfectly healthy.
Ignore the words and look at what these people do. They don't want you to be a doctor. It's not just filtering out idiots and the untalented; plenty of those make it through. Ask yourself: If this profession is so important, shouldn't I have gotten at least the slightest bit of help along the way, rather than every barrier possible being erected to stop me? Ask yourself: Shouldn't someone with a bachelors in biochemistry and ten years of experience as a Physicians Assistant be able to become a doctor faster than someone with a B.A. in English Literature?
