I grew up on SciShow and Vsauce. I watched the -1/12 video when I was 13. I think I even memorized the "proof". 6 years later I'm studying math. Videos like that one got me interested in the subject--I think they do good work in at least dispelling the popular notion that math is a dry series of formulas. I'd rather people think of math as something magical and wild (which it is), and not dry, unimaginative, and boring (which people think it is). Every non-math person who's seen the -1/12 video is one more person who's been presently surprised my something in math. How is this a bad thing?

I think this is almost the best form of pop-sci; it isn't presenting am argument about something concrete and important with big errors and simplifications, it's illustrating the powrr of rational reasoning even in the seemingly absurd. Sure it's inaccurate, but I cringe at most undergrad physics courses because they're kind of wrong, you go through a lot of wrong before you get to 'maybe wrong but we're not sure yet' i.e. modern physics.
