An example of this is the Sphinx in Egypt. The common consensus is that it was built a few thousand years ago by the Egyptians that built the pyramids, but certain scientists believe that it was built much, much earlier due to erosion that couldn't have been caused by the arid environment. There are scientists that believe that the head itself wasn't originally human shaped but appears so today due to this erosion. It's possible that it is tens of thousands of years old, and that humans had reached a more advanced form of civilization, but that almost all records of it were lost in time.
