How do we know the distance between the earth and moon if we don't have a ruler that long?

If your ruler isn't long enough you can see roughly how much longer the distance is, if it's and extra 4th of a ruler or more like ~3 rulers long.
This is why the moon has an "average distance" this is the average of a bunch of astronomers guesses.
