I think he looks good in formal wear, but he doesn't need to go full black suit+black tie. In general, I think slightly more casual, but still formal clothing is best for an academic. Like more earth tones, or pastels, or tweed. Roger Penrose is obviously pretty old, but I think he has the right balance between casual and formal (pic rel.). In OP's pic, Nick Bostrom is slightly too casual, and Lex Friedman is just a little too formal.
