do cosmic rays hit atoms on earths surface to make muons or can they just be made by cosmic rays in the upper atmosphere?

but i thought that we could see cosmic rays in cloud chambers. does this mean that cosmic rays make it through the whole atmosphere all the way to the surface of the earth and that same muon reaction can occur?

They are produced mostly in the upper atmosphere. In fact the flux attenuates quite fast. I did research in Colorado and it's really nice there because at 1600 m altitude the flux is about twice that of sea level.

Very interesting. How expensive is a lab to study them too? I know it's like how long is a piece of string but if I wanted to do cosmic rays experiments would it be millions or thousands?

Not the same guy, but as you assume it really depends on what you want to see. There are typical 2nd/3rd year undergrad labs of measuring pion flux at sea level, a direct result of cosmic rays in the upper atmosphere. All you need are a couple scintillators (to detect the massive particles), and some basic electronics to collect/measure the signal.

op here I've been reading about it today. I'm going to need a problem to solve before I start worrying about gear but with cloudchambers and scintillators it wouldn't be too expensive

Ya scintillators aren't too expensive...depending on the material. You probably won't be "discovering" anything with a simple set-up, but you could verify some experimental results. Like find the velocity of these subatomic particles, then calculate the time dilation that they experience.

something like those experiments would hopefully require some hard enough math that i would learn a lot. Like with the whole point of this thread - does pion decay happen at sea level due to cosmic rays I didn't know how to calculate it and so had to ask
