I just don't understand this reusable test stand meme.

The amount of money you can save from reusing test stands isn’t enough to justify how much harder it makes it to perform the difficult burns at usually make money in the testing world. I’m sure one day reusability will be more effective, but the truth is that when you have all the challenges that come with structural science in general, it’s almost always much more effective to throw away the stand after it’s done its job than to figure out how to make recovery part of the mission. I know of no major technology on the near term horizon that would change that.

Even if reusable test stands are possible now, but when reliability is THE number one priority (in this case the core stage takes up 2/3rds of the cost and the actual stand only 1/3rd) it makes absolutely no sense. Like, look at this test stand (pic related). This represents some of the most advanced technologies in the aerospace world. Do you honestly think that such a complicated machine can be made tough and reliable enough to be reusable? I doubt it. Best example in my opinion is condoms, sure you could reuse them but making sure that they do not suffer a drop in reliability will cost a lot of money and time.

Just because some country made reusing test stand popular, then that doesn't mean that we will have the sci-fi future of millions of rocket engine burns per year. We'll be lucky to see more than a couple dozen per year. Dial down your expectations, don't buy into the 'reusability for test stands' meme.

My guess would be hydrogen embrittled leading edges of the turbomachinery blades, since poor Engine 4 has already been fired 6 times, twice more than is strictly speaking safe. If the blades had failed at the roots the engine would have exploded like a bomb, but if they failed at the tips those shreds of metal/composite could be what we're seeing fly out of the engine. No bell breach or seal failures because there were no jets of hot burning gas coming from places they shouldn't.

I don't get where this is coming from. The engine MAY be fucked. All we know is that there was component failure followed shortly by a redline and abort. PART of the engine is definitely fucked, but a full replacement isn't neccesarily going to happen.

Dude, life support is a complicated thing, the more people you carry, more complicated it becomes. Every person is breathing, eating, sweating, drinking, wants to wash himself, wants to piss and shit. If you design a ship for 100 of people, its going to be a nightmare to make a life support system for them. I know its HARD for you to understand because in the mocies like Star Wars they have ships with 10000 of people on board and they have artificial gravity and they never mention how they all survive in space in such numbers on ships, but in real world, you need to solve the life support problem, and its hard, really hard. So far Elon never even acknowledged it as a problem. Hell, we haven't even seen solar batteries latest design or the communication array on Starship, we don't know if it will have an antena to speak to Earth.

There is also a refueling problem in space which has not been tested and it requires a lot of back to back launches of Starships with an insane efficiency, like when Starship going to orbit then the Starhsip tanker goes up that same day and refuels it and then another tanker the next day, and another one the next day, and another one the next day and another one the next day...And for Mars trip you need like 10 of these tankers? Were there any Falcon 9 10-in a row streak-series of launches separated by a day? So Starship also has to learn to do this before they go to Mars. Refueling is the one that will likely be tricky. I don't think it's going to be IMPOSSIBLE, per se, but to my knowledge it hasn't really been done aside from a few propellant transfers on the ISS. It makes it a lot harder when there isn't old data to look at.

Also I remember a few anons telling me they plan on transferring the fuel directly through the engine bells. Was this just a shitpost or is that the actual plan?

Over-reliance on modeling and excessive engineering. Probably very poorly documented, plus yeah it's 60 years old so basically ancient. There were probably a lot of small tweaks and stuff that the engineers did here and there, but neglected to actually write it down. Just look how badly people comment their code. And then some other guy comes in and has to try figuring out how the code actually works

Hell, I remember Louis Rossmann the Thinkpad man commenting one time that his staff in the shop isn't interchangeable. They have their certain ways of doing the workflow, and if some new guy came in to replace somebody, it would never be the same. And that's just a laptop repair shop, not people trying to build a rocket. Or I guess in this case it's kinda like trying to reverse engineer it
