What is the purpose of these strap-looking things around a gymnast's hands?

Some argue that it is for grip whilst others argue that it is a means of evenly transferring force about the body.

depends on the the material of the strap , maybe it's used to lower the force of friction to smooth and maximize rotation on the grip , or maybe their palms aren't calcified so they dont want their palm's skin to be ripped

It is more incomprehensible to me why people invest so much time in a sport that ultimately damages them. I have two female colleagues who spent 20 hours a week on this and quit when they were 18 or 19. Now they have a lot of damages to joints and back for the rest of their lives.

Women seem to be into debilitating stuff. Ballet dancers are quite damaged by the age of 30 and one said it took her half an hour to get out of bed these days, all because of pain.

Women's handball is brutal, I know two how played as girls and have lots of damages, especially the wrists but also some knee problems.
