lads, any tips on writing a manuscript?

I am writing my second manuscript but I struggle between writing too much referencing other works and not being concise enough

what do you guys find useful when publishing OR what do you guys like about papers you've read? I'm in an a bit of an odd research-field, sort of the interface between synthetic chemistry and entomology

any tips appreciated
