What exactly is an acid? We're told a substance that can donate protons is an acid, but really, we have two things, the substance itself and the protons, which of these is the actual acid? If I have a solution that says it's acidic and I remove all the protons will it still be acidic and its solute acid? How can blood CO2 be used to measure acidity when it has no protons to donate?
