how about a book on applying linear algebra to machine learning. I am trying to teach myself programming and machine learning and I have made it through about 65 of 110 videos by the stanford professor, but I do not see how to set up the linear equations based on the data set.

If you are in engineering/economics/etc., then literally all these books are identical.
If you are in applied math/physics, then LADR is a good book (since it sets everything up for functional and operator analysis), but it has some flaws. LADW is also nice
If you are in pure math, pretty much all of them are shit. You'll have to go through Bourbaki. If you can't, 'LA through exterior forms' is an alternative.

dude the common core linear algebra curriculum is the fucking same almost anywhere, also chances are you will skip most chapters of whatever book your course uses, also nice straw man completely disregarding what i said, i explicitly pointed out that the best book is the one that best fits you, so it will likely either be your course's appointed one or whatever else you decide to go with for whatever reason as long as it covers your course's syllabus, back during my lin alg days i had 3-4 to choose from, i picked the one i liked the most and used the others as back up mostly for their problem sets, i swear /sci/ is so fucking autistic when it comes to bibliography, you faggots think that everyone needs to use every single russian author IMO book or medal fields books otherwise they're fucking posers, the fact that you waste your time here already tells me everything i need to know about you fuck you

Could hardly be called linear algebra then. All you need to know for that is matrix multiplication, row reduction, finding the spectrum and eigenvectors, and maybe diagonalization (for symmetric stress tensors or w/e).

for engineers idk, but for math I've found friedberg, insel, spence to be amazing compared to anything I've read.
Axler seems to have a good rep, but only as a second read since it lacks some important concepts; really good for understanding tho
Hoffman and kunze is only good if it's what you've been taught from. otherwise it's hard and inefficient to go through on your own

Math major textbooks focus on abstract vector spaces and linear transformations. Engineering books focus on matrices and method of computation. They cover different aspects. Think how calculus can branch off to real analysis or numerical analysis.
