tell him you're not a human calculator, the exams or whatever should evaluate your cognitive abilities such as your creativity coming up with a solution to the problem you're presented and not your computational abilities, we have machines to do that for us now, also it's way more efficient this way, no one computes stuff with pen and paper in the real world, do you think a civil engineer designing a bridge is doing cross multiplication to find out the stress on some steel beam? do you think nasa propulsion engineers are using pen and paper to figure out the jet thrust for some mars lander?

probably because most modern calculators will solve almost everything for you and even graph the results, i really don't see the problem with using a basic calculator with the 4 arithmetics operations and nothing else

Luckily enough for you, there exists methods
of doing multiplication without much memorization.
Chisanbop uses the lifting and pressing of fingers
on a table to work through arithmetic.
Also, the Trachtenberg method uses extremely
concise rules involving certain numbers so that
arithmetic is relatively quick and error-less.

I think I have the Trachtenberg PDF somewhere,
so I could track it down if you want it.

It's time for you to unclamp. Although admittedly I never memorized the alphabet in index form and I always have to start with some letter and go forward until I do or do not reach the letter, where it should just be a numerical comparison. This has annoyed me for years but I've never bothered to fix it.

Nah it's about consistency. If you're just doing a day-to-day calculation it doesn't matter but anything that's actually important should be calculated with a calculator. One small mistake (even when sometimes it's not an actual mistake just a difference in rounding) can end up ruining weeks worth of experiments or invalidating all the work you send to the regulatory agencies. Don't fuck around when it actually matters.

Honestly i use calculators to check even when i know the answer because i simply dont trust my brain to be correct about anything because the mind is a tricky asshole who wants to sabotage everything.
