What is the minimum classical mechanics I need to know to read this?

I already know linear algebra and differential equations. It's just the physics that I'm not so familiar with.

You don't need to know any more than that, I'd start reading Griffiths if that's what you wanna read. Knowing a bit about Lagrangians etc. will at some point provide some important insights.

It would probably be an easier read with classical under your belt but its just a reformulation of classical to begin with so you should probably be able to get through it ok.

So it doesn't assume analytical mechanics? Because I can see sometimes it talks about Hamiltonian operators - is it okay to just use them without knowing their undrelying meaning?

The Griffiths is probably one of the best books ever written because of its focus on being pedagogical and clear. I know shit about physics and I enjoyed the book. All you need is calc, complex variables, linalg and diffeq at some basic level.

Hamiltonian is just the total energy operator (potential and kinetic). Now you know the underlying "meaning". But you don't even need to now that to just do the computation.

You need to digest all of Goldstein's classical mechanics, especially the last few chapters on symmetry of Hamiltonians and Poisson brackets, to really understand QM. But Griffith's is designed to bypass that stuff, so you get a surface level lame knowledge of the subject. Still better than nothing.

just go for it. QM relies on hamiltonian physics, but you don't really need to know the classical theory.

btw, while i like griffisu and this book, the book doesn't well prepare you for more advanced QM

There are 3 major prerequisites before going into Quantum Mechanics.

Classical Mechanics.
Electromagnetism.
Waves.

Everything on Quantum mechanics assumes you've mastered this stuff so without it you're going to get lost very quickly.

If you already know Def EQ then you know classical mechanics in practice i suppose. QM has little to do with it. Wave funtions, complex nummbers, martix algebra

You should be fine with a minimal physics background, stuff like electromagnetism and maybe some newtonian mechanics, should come pretty easy if you know lin alg and diff eqs already
