Is it a bad idea to work as a math teacher or software developer for a few years before I go to grad school or will I be fucked when I try to go back to school?

In that boat now, working in tech. It seems like it's not an uncommon path. I see people leave to go to grad school every so often, and I would definitely recommend it if you're unsure. I'm enjoying making lots of money, and learning a lot. Not sure about teaching tho.

They're primarily media figures, not groundbreaking scientists. I mean Bill Nye maxed out his education with a BS in mechanical engineering.

That doesn't make them hacks in their respective fields, however, just not as good as some of the greatest physicists to ever live. That's nothing to be ashamed of.
