Not in my experience. I think it's just more pronounced when you encounter a PhD who doesn't know how to use a wrench. The reaction is often "guess he's not so smart after all," but that really seems to be a brainlet cope.

I would think it is more of a bell - there are dummies with zero of both - most people who really know one thing have read enough to know more - but at the far extreme of specific knowledge you have almost idiot savants.
