Especially when from his perspective it will simply seem like his parents have finally found a way to behave towards him that is at least inclusive. Caring about the label or how to account for it instead of simply trying and seeing what satisfies the anxieties of all people involved is the sign of a retarded parent, not a problem child.
On that note I wonder how many retarded parents are actually the problem and not the child? The arrogance of a lot of parents believing that they are the sole truth holders of their offspring is definitely the source of a lot of negative social qualities.
