oldfag here, I tried to learn this stuff in college in the 90s, and I just experienced what can best be described a douche-chill-type-panic-attack when I saw it. Is this normal?

What do you mean?
Just learn the definition as an integral, and then the rest just follows from either simple examples which you will get familiar with, or learning some general properties of these types of integrals.
