During the hight of the cold war when everyone else was working on nuclear bombs Sagan was working on SETI trying to contact UFOs. I refuse to believe an open minded scientist would pursue a campaign of shutting down other scientists because he didn't like the way they think. It really sounds like you misremembered this and are attributing what someone else did to Sagan.
