my highest math is calc 2 which was like integrals and shit. I'm pretty worried I'll have to start paying attention to pass

If you're asking this question, that tells me you've never taken econometrics. You shouldn't be worried at this point though things will ramp up as you continue your studies. I don't recall doing integration (though derivation may be required) when I was doing econometrics 1. For reference, here are the subjects my old syllabus lists
>populations and samples
>mean, variance, covariance, correlation
>sampling space and event
>definitions and properties of probabilities
>joint probabilities and Bayes theorem
>discrete and continuous random variables
>distribution of sample mean and sample variance
>point and interval estimate for mean and variance
>hypothesis testing on mean and variance
>ordinary least squares estimation, properties, and testing

yeah, I'm a 3rd year econ student, having already done intermediate macro/micro and some other econ classes
It looks more like statistical analysis stuff than like hard math which makes sense given the name. I'm taking another class too called mathematical economics. so far it's all been pretty breezy but these names are fairly intimidating. thanks for the response

Analysis and Abstract algebra aren't difficult, it's just relearning everything you thought you knew about math, but properly this time. The real fun doesn't start until Diff Geo.

I thought most programs had mandatory econometrics classes in the 1st year so I'm surprised you've never taken a class until the 3rd year. Are you taking introductory econometrics or is the class assuming you've already done lots of statistics? I think what I described only applies to introductory econometrics but not to something like econometrics 2 or econometrics 3. I believe I've done derivatives, integrals, linear algebra (statistics with matrices), and proofs in my econometrics 3 class. You might want to pay a little more attention if you're expected to actually understand the material and do proofs.

yeah I've taken some basic statistics classes in high school and college, as they were prereqs for econometrics. We only have the one level of it and its class number indicates it's a 4th year class, so maybe it's going to be more like econometrics 2 or 3 like you're saying. I haven't taken linear algebra but I've heard it's probably smart.

If you're supposed to learn linear algebra, you'll be taught linear algebra (same thing for other material). Unless they're setting students up to fail, they aren't going to throw curve balls at you.

that does make sense, and is a relief to hear from someone else. Though last semester I had a professor new to my college that was very taken aback to hear most of us hadn't been taught game theory in our micro courses before taking his class (industrial-organizational econ), but he was a great guy and taught us everything we needed to know for it.
