What if the increase in autism cases is due to environment toxins? We're being bombarded by low levels of toxins constantly. Everything at safe levels of course, at least individually in each product. However could the toxins accumulate in our environment? Perhaps they could create an interaction and some kind of effect we're missing that either has some profound effect on sperm or other related reproductive processes?

retrospective cohort makes the most sense in this case

Contrary to what most people believe, humans have pesticide "resistance" genes similar to what insects have, which are being highly selected currently. It's just it takes a few generations for them to reach a significant proportion of the population, unlike 10 years or so for insects.

This gene is interesting, it very likely does a lot more, given the high selection in "agricultural" populations such as mexicans, whites, indians, it likely reduces fetal lethality of peticides as well.

Essentially just expect a lot of autism predisposing genes to exit the human genome, including "common" autism predisposing genes.

Mothers are told to take supplemental folate. There may be some research indicating low and overly high maternal folic acid levels are linked with autism risk but nothing definitive as yet in case of high folic acid levels. What's most important is ensuring NTDs don't occur.

Nothing really. Expect MTHFR folate-reducing genes to leave the population as well, humans will most likely develop increasingly many tandem repeats of the aldehyde dehydrogenase gene, as that's our best and most likely pesticide resistance gene. There's literally nothing you can do to escape pesticide/herbicide exposure, nothing, if NTD happens, then as far as Monsanto's concerned that's a dead baby who couldn't take the heat.

Insects with immunity to pesticides exhibit hundreds of repeats (in some instances) of genes associated with resistance, but that's for negation of the neural effect the genes have on them. For humans it's vasculatory, you can't experience the carcinogenic effects if your body flushes the chemicals out.

Well I'm going to be honest I don't have a degree. Just a layman. I was more here to get a more trained opinion on my thoughts. I'm trying to understand it, not nearly this many people were neuro-atypical before. In some cases it's not an option to hide the illness so I don't see how it could be entirely a matter of more diagnosis. Though that is probably part of it.

So yeah, given NTD is so common, and pesticide use is ramping up, expect our aldehyde dehydrogenase genes to ramp up as well.

That's a policy thing which I can't dictate but considering how thalidomide went if Monsanto or anyone created a product which severely deranged folate metabolism and caused a significant rise in the cases of severe NTDs like meningomyelocele or anencephaly in the US then there would be an outcry to ban that product.

NTD is a relatively common birth defect but most are not that severe. Spina bifida occulta is not that bad. What's worrisome is anencephaly or complications of spinal dysraphism.
Folic acid fortification in grains and supplementation has been a godsend in reducing the cases of NTDs and most of the women who develop NTDs are not educated well about supplementation because they skip out on resources and following regular checkups even in the US.
Worldwide fortification is necessary and more education is necessary as well.
This will reduce the risk of NTDs and likely autism as well.

That's not discounting the possibility that pesticides have a preterm lethal effect, such as increased rates of abortions. But the action they have on disrupting metabolism I'm assuming can't be negated by supplementation, thus instead of causing death by NTD you're probably just downgrading it to autism of some severity, parkinsons, alzheimers, ect. In fact, haven't the rates of transgender individuals been increasing recently? Autistic traits are correlated with being trans.
