Are drugs necessary to function in modern life?

Most successful people drink coffee or other caffeine-containing drinks everyday. Hollywood stars all do coke or w/e. We never really evolved to live in such a hyperstimulating world - so do we need stimulants to be able to function? Were coffee and tea the drivers of the development of the modern West and East? Apparently coffeehouses were the hotbed of political discussion in Europe. Nazis were boosted by meth. As the future becomes increasingly complex and interconnected, as we have already seen some of now with the internet, will we need more drugs (either stimulants to succeed [caffeine, adderall, ritalin, meth, nicotine] or depressants to cope [alcohol, weed, opioids]) to function?
