>>12563475>is data science a meme?Yes, and no. Let me explain. You _need_ to hire someone with at least MS in CS or MS in Stats. Resumes from bootcamp babies and "Data Science" degrees (even if a MS in DS) are automatically thrown away at the Human Resources level when we're hiring. We've been burned too many times by people that know fuck all. Also, no your MOOC/Coursera certificates do not mean anything.
When we hire someone with a MS in CS or MS in Stats, then we have a pretty good idea of what we're getting in terms of knowledge/skillset and where to go from there to train them up on other things (i.e. the stats guy will need more programming/tech training than the cs guy but he knows his stats, and similarly the cs will need some work on tech/programming but we can train him up on the stats side of things).
>Seems like it's the new hip career that is being pushed. That's because MBA retards read about it in MBA Fuckwit Monthly, and the FOMO is real. So you end up having companies throwing all kinds of money at it, and then wonder why their projects fail most of the time. Moreover, there is a concerted push by some to flood the market with entry level personnel to drive down wages (i.e. "let's deflate the wage bubble"), and universities are using their data science programs as another cash cow. What most people looking to enter/transition into data science don't realize is that the field is oversaturated at the junior level (less than three years of _SOLID_ fulltime/40hr per week work experience).
I'll be online for a few more hours if any one has any questions.
