I was taught that multiplication and division have no hierarchical precedence, and you just go left to right. Implicit multiply by open paren does not count as in paren.

you do the parentheses first and that gives you
6/2*3

Then you do multiplication and division, whichever comes first. So in this case you do 6/2 first which gives:

3*3=9

Yes, you were taught that. But that is not the notation actual mathematicians actually use. As in many other cases, what you learned in grade school is only a starting point, an approximation of reality, and not the end-all be-all answer.
