think about it
x^1*x^1 = x^2, right? so x^a*x^b = x^(a+b)

but also,
x^2/x^1 = x^1, so x^a/x^b = x^(a-b)

1/x^5 = x^0/x^5 = x^(0-5) = x^-5

for integer powers, just think of the exponent as "how many times you multiplied 1 by the variable". you can think of multiplying negative n times being the same as dividing n times.

the language breaks down a little but it works the exact same for non-integer powers and their relation to radicals:

?x*?x = x
x^0.5+x^0.5 = x^(0.5+0.5) = x^1 = x

therefore ?x = x^0.5

By simplifying: x/x^2 = (x/x) * 1/x = 1/x

Therefore x^(-1) = 1/x, in general x^(-n) = 1/x^n
