XOR is basically addition mod 2, 1+1=1 doesn't make any sense

just a weird notation thing, the main reason is because + (from regular algebra) feels more analogous to or than xor
but yes, in modulo 2, + is xor

i.e. you have the same rules for manipulating + and * as you do in regular algebra
