The reason that viruses typically evolve to be more contagious and less harmful is because killing the host too fast or reliably is a bad strategy, evolutionarily speaking, since dead people don't cough, and if everyone dies, then the other people are actually scared and actually self isolate, i.e. no grocery store workers etc but actual unmandated voluntary plague shutdown caused by fear.
If however you inoculate a large percentage of the population in a way that makes the symptoms less bad, but doesn't prevent transmission, you create evolutionary circumstances in which the virus can advantageously increase its lethality quite a bit, since most people will not have severe symptoms even with a very aggressive strain.
So, get ready to a new covid strain which is highly lethal to unvaccinated people in oh i dunno i'm not a virologist so really I just understand the principle not the time scales involved.
