cool physics pop/sci/ books

my dad just watched Interstellar and wants to read some interesting pop/sci/ book on the physics of it. ideally, it should be about those physical topics the general audience finds intriguing, stuff like gravity, black holes, quantum physics and so on (i don't think he wants to read about classical mechanics or thermodynamics). now i know of Hawking's book and it's what i'm currently planning on getting, but i wanted to ask /sci/ whether there might be any alternatives out there as good or better
P.S. if i go for Hawking's book, should i get the basic or the illustrated edition?
