Living life as a nonstop competition is exhausting for the best of the best, and most don't have a chance of being in the running. It's not an excuse to shortchange yourself, it's an honest reckoning with the limits of your abilities. If you are unable to do this then the natural decline in ability that comes with aging is going to be a big shock.
If by some miracle someone on this board is both lucky and skilled enough to be top 10 in the world for whatever it is they do then by all means go hell for leather, get a hair transplant, start hanging out with celebrities and marry a washed up canadian pop star. Most people however are going to have to psychically cope with settling for being just as good as they can be. One way of doing this is by living less for what impact you can have alone on the whole world, and instead living for the impact you can have on the small world that surrounds you (friends, family, lovers, colleagues). For most these are the things that real happiness is derived from.
