roughly speaking, 3 minutes warmup of circular motions over scalp, light pressure
6 minutes pinching areas of the scalp about an inch across, holding for a second, then moving to adjacent part of scalp, using enough pressure to slightly redden the skin
6 minutes pushing down with knuckles on the scalp, while moving knuckles around a bit, also for about a second and then moving to the next area
5 minutes stretching the skin, again with some pressure, holding for a bit, then moving on
in the study this was done twice a day at 12 hour intervals, but you can modify all of this to suit you - you can spend less time on the massages if you want, or do them less frequently, but after sustaining this for a long time, they got some pretty great and pretty consistent results, so this looks good as a free treatment
As for why you do this - the authors have the idea that baldness is actually caused in males by the scalp tightening and thinning with age. This is actually quite well supported by recent numerical modelling, and it is observed that bald men have tighter scalps. So the idea behind the massages appears to be based on a recent Japanese study which suggested that massages were a way to stretch the scalp around the follicles and enable hair to grow back thicker. The massage is thus designed to increase blood flow, stimulate the scalp to break up some of the tension in the scalp over time as it thins and tightens, and then to stretch it slightly, so that hair growth is promoted, and also hair is helped to grow back thicker.
