The airplane doesn't need a big propeller, because the wings do all the work. If you put your hand out the car window at a slight angle, the air will lift it.
The helicopter doesn't have any wings, but instead has a huge ass propeller. This allows it to lift vertically, while the plane needs a runway to gather speed, much as your car needs to be moving so the air can lift your hand. Also, the helicopter blades tilt to create lift. The little tail rotor at the end essentially creates "horizontal lift" in a counterclockwise fashion, so the main hull doesn't spin, which it would if it had only the bigger rotor.
