In terms of deaths per capita? Kung flu is not even close to any of these yet. It would have to kill 5 million (and probably will soon enough) just to match Russian flu, which itself was barely a blip compared to outbreaks that you didn't list.

It's not like Ebola is gone, it's still in Africa, but it's really nothing for the rest of the world. I'm not saying that can't change, we may end up with a virus that is super transmissible and deadly at some point (it looked like SARS-CoV-2 might be that, but fortunately it wasn't nearly as deadly as SARS or MERS), but it would probably require something like SARS-CoV-2 that spreads readily prior to developing symptoms. SARS, MERS, and Ebola fortunately don't/didn't seem to spread until after symptoms developed, so it's possible to quarantine the sick and stop the chain of transmission.

You clearly missed the ebola pandemic of 2013. Had we reacted as slow as China, that would have been a doomsday event.
Agree with the rest. Thankfully so. With the number of infected people mutations are highly likely though, and if something like the thing at the mink farms evolves from SARS-nCoV-2, we're fucked.

Probably with super deadly viruses with obvious symptoms like Ebola though is we can diagnose and isolate patients immediately even before testing is available. And the initial scare will instigate a bunch of research and production ASAP unlike what China did in the beginning.
What's the danger scenario is a highly transmissible prion or some other vector of disease that activates into a fatal form after exposure.

Is there anything like this currently or previously, that activated into a different, fatal form? I'm familiar with borrelia burgdorferi, which can morph into different forms, which makes it almost impossible to completely eliminate at a certain point. Vector-borne diseases seem like they could be a major issue with warming temperatures, and there's no selective pressure for something spread by an insect to not kill the new host.

Ah, another anon with personal experience. I had Lyme years ago, the sickest I've ever been in my life. I honestly thought I had malaria until the rash appeared, and it took several months before I started to feel normal again. I fucking hate ticks and all the shit they spread.

As soon as I spotted the rash, I went to the doctor and was given a dose of intravenous Doxycycline and then two weeks of Doxy at 100 mg per day. Still felt awful at two weeks, went back to the doctor, he said there was nothing else to be done. I considered going to a Lyme specialist, but it would have meant 2-3 months on multiple antibiotics, and I generally feel like crap on antibiotics anyway. I did nothing and started to improve. It was about two months before I felt somewhat normal. I have a chronic headache that started maybe four months after the infection, perhaps it's related or not, I manage it with coffee and otherwise feel fine. I suspect I may have also had babesiosis, which is pretty similar to malaria and matched my symptoms. I'm in a Lyme hot spot, and had dozens of ticks pulled off me as a child, plus I was prone to severe sickness, high fevers, and developed migrating joint pain in my teens, so I suspect I've had it (still have it?) multiple times in my life. My joints are a lot better than they used to be, actually my health in general is pretty good now except for the chronic headache.

Did you receive any kind of treatment?

Heh, yup, pretty similar symptoms. All of the diseases can cause fever, chills, headaches, air hunger, palpitations, and nausea, so it's hard to tell. I had the erythema migrans, so that's at least positive for Borrellia. Fuck ticks, good for nothing pieces of shit.

Chronic headache sounds shitty, but at least you made it through everything else. Apparently, getting doxycyclin or ceftriaxon early on can help the body fight it off completely, so it seems you're in luck.

I got doxycyclin for three weeks. Took four months until I was able to do light sports again. Had crazy heart palpitations, migraine with aura, breathing problems, and other neurological symptoms. Went to seven doctors, and they all told me it was just stress. Only the last one did a test for Lyme after heavily insisting and the test came back with extremely obvious results. I'm not sure I received treatment early enough, since I had a relapse two months ago, where the heart palpitations started again. Ever since then, my heart doesn't quite beat right under load.
