/sci/, could the Earth survive something like this? That is, could the loss of 30-45% of its mass at least keep some shape of a sphere to it, or physics just would not work that way?

Assuming an impact could somehow form a shape like that, it'd pretty much immediately collapse down into a sphere shape due to gravity.

In addition to this, a huge amount of matter would be in orbit around Earth and rain down onto the surface as the orbit decayed. Much of the Earth would be liquidised.
Nothing on the surface would survive.

Greatly. No OP, sorry, you'd have "floating continents" but the surface of which would be in so horrific of flux nothing could survive there. Recall if you would, if you've seen it of course, when Praxis in ST VI blew out. That's the closest I could describe the visual. You'd be dead by quakes ranging in the 15-20 magnitude and winds blowing around about the speed they do near Saturns poles.

The highest surface deviation on earth is about 10 kilometers, as in a "mountain" that is higher than that will collapse under it's own weight or sink into the earth. If you carve a hole bigger than that then it will simply collapse and fill in.

If the OP picture happened to eart the remaining planet would quickly collapse into a new sphere and pretty much all rock would melt as it does so.

The surface would be molten mantle. The less dense crust would be entirely ripped away on impact. The surface would cool eventually, but it's not even up for consideration that anything will live on it. Everything on the crust gets annihilated, including the crust itself.

Proportionally, not much of the earth's mass would be lost in an impact like that. The crust would be turned to ash and most of it would be propelled out of the atmosphere past escape velocity. The crust is only 1% of the volume of earth, and the mantle is viscous. Different materials have different stress tolerances. Imagine hitting a giant ball of glass the size of a car with a metal bat vs hitting the same size ball of dough with a metal bat. There would be two very different outcomes.
