In CS, why is the term "node" commonly used for binary trees, instead of "vertex"?

I see both used. I think I actually see "vertex" used more often in computing than "node", personally. At least when dealing with stuff like graph databases. But you may be right that "node" is used more often for tree-based data structures like binary trees.

I personally prefer the term "node" because it seems clearer to me and is clearer to people new to graphs, but I don't mind either of them and I don't think anyone would look at you funny if you used either in any context. I don't believe either one is more correct, but I could be wrong

my take:
vertex is used when you look on the binary tree from graph theoretic point of view, usually disregarding it's internal properties and implementation details,
node is used when you look on the binary tree as a data structure, and you care about the data associated with each vertex, among other implementation details
