I'd argue that organic functions and metabolism need to be utilized in trans-humanism. Steel and plastic cannot repair themselves so easily, so I feel like carbon based structures and DNA-like command chains are required to manage complex systems. Technology will never be as elegant as what our micro-level organs are. Both areas need to be utilized for ultimate existence.
