If you're having trouble understanding it, it's probably because you don't intuitively understand the concept of a field, dot product, vectors, or integrals. All of these concepts have a "physical" meaning, but unless you actually understand all of them it just sounds like a cop-out answer. When I was in undergrad I remember a lot of my classmates would struggle with the physical meaning of certain concepts even if they understood the math perfectly well.
