When the first stage still has lots of fuel the center of mass should be below the top canards meaning you can turn them into any wind.
By the time the first stage is getting light and the center of mass moves ahead of the canards the air should be getting thin enough for wind to matter less.

No, the dry mass ratio was fucked and would always be fucked. You get no benefit of scale, it was powered by tiny engines that because of cost, scale, and manufacturing capacity cannot be sophisticated, , and 1/3 of your tankage capacity was storing fucking air for ullage.

I'm not exactly qualified to do the structural analysis on that design, so I'm not gonna pretend to know for sure, but that whole configuration looks sketchy as fuck. Suspending a dynamic load on the scale of a superheavy booster on a mobile arm just sticking out of a tower looks wrong.

I'm somewhat skeptical that it'd be necessary of desirable to have the mount/receiver/clamp/whatever move. If they can't get the accuracy from a booster necessary to land on a static point, I'm not sure that any potential catching device can move fast enough to correct for this, especially not without potentially misjudging/overshooting the movement and impacting the booster as it comes down.

This might be another instance of overly ambitious autism from Elon like the methane cooled heat shield but I think they have proven that their software is good enough for superheavy to be accurate enough. I really hope SpaceX looks into it. Even if they don't use it for propulsion (which it is the most amazing technology that's actually feasible unlike memes like VASIMIR), it can also be used as a charged particle radiation shield for the crew and possibly Magnetoshell Aerocapture which could save on deltaV.

I think that superheavy will have more control, since its heavier plus it has more individual engines, they should be able to throttle it deeper and have a more gentle landing. But I think SpaceX is seething over the turnaround time with legs, it takes them a while to fold them back, inspect them, replace them if they are damaged, etc. Plus steel is stronger under a tensile load vs compression, so if this autistic convoluted rocket catcher actually works, its less likely to cause damage and more likely to get back on the pad in a few hours. They are really banking on a high flight rate so I think that is the primary motivator vs saving a bit of mass.

Nope. The USAF is exclusively responsible for both strategic and tactical fixed wing airlift for the entire DOD. Almost every cargo plane you see (other than a small fleet of light transports subordinate to the Army’s special operations aviation element, USMC/USN C-130 tankers, and carrier resupply craft) are part of the Air Force. Theoretically, Space Force could get the Earth to Earth transport mission, but since it’s decidedly a type of strategic airlift and suborbital, the Air Force would have a decent case to keep it under their purview.

I think a lot of it comes from different company cultures early on. SpaceX almost went bankrupt (along with Musk) before they had any significant success, and ended up surviving solely due to their ability to eventually get results. BO, on the other hand, has had a steady IV drip of cash from daddy Bezos for their entire existence, regardless of what they accomplish. Scarcity often breeds innovation, while abundance breeds complacency.

Where would we be today had the Saturn-Shuttle been selected? sure, the design called for discarding the F-1 engines every flight, but as we all know, SpaceX has proven that reusing LOX/RP-1 engines is completely viable. The replacement of large solid rocket boosters by a proven first stage mounted further from the orbiter would reduce the likelyhood of any challenger style disasters on ascent and the usage of Saturn hardware would also allow for a revival of the Saturn V later down the line, much better than SLS.
Another factor to consider is that the orbiter's engines would be upper stage only, so the infamously expensive and difficult to reuse SSMEs could be dropped in favour of vacuum J-2s.

Even if Elon isnt personally responsible for the nitty gritty technical work of rocketry, he is still an engineer by training and he understands the basic principles behind what is going on.

Well it is an outboard engine designed to be run half submerged for cooling, it wouldn't be safe to make more than 1 trip across land.
We could develop a new engine using the existing boat engine as a base for the "Rapid Alternate Design" engine. We expect to be able to produce the RAD engine for less than tripple the cost of the current water optimized design.

I know you didn’t make this render, but my only critique is that instead of having 4 specific shock pads (which would require super accurate landing orientation) they could just make two half-rings that close in and form a closed circle. They already have to handle a lot of force, so strengthening them to handle a bit more is just an extension of what's already there.

On the downside this makes SH/Starship stack dependent on this tower, and a catch failing would likely result in a huge mess. In addition relying on a catch may make SH more sensitive to wind/weather.

Everything in rocketry is a balancing act with pros and cons. Just have to find the right mixture of them because you'll rarely come across something that's all pros.

Magnetosphere doesn't protect much from radiation. The proposed car, or bus sized, space magnet is meant to generate field preventing the erosion of the thing actually protecting from the radiation - the atmosphere.

You can do without it mind you. The solar radiation its meant to block is not that notable on mars unless its a really bad day and it hits you right at noon butt naked in the open. Then again there are UV warnings even around where I live in the summer, so...

The actual radiation need be blocked by mass, atmospheric or not.

Problem is that it's tied to blue origin so it will likely see a 2023 launch at earliest. By then Starship will be up and running when leaves NG in a weird spot where it's overkill for most launches but more expensive than Starship for larger ones. Only hope it has at that point is if daddy Bezos personally subsidizes each launch. Which he might do regardless so he can put his starlink competitor in orbit.

Besides Starship, New Glenn is probably the best rocket in development. It's partially reusable, comparable to the Falcon Heavy but simpler (though that market segment may be too small for two rockets), and has a huge fairing that's perfect for constellations and even stuff like telescopes or space station modules. Shame that Blue Origin is half-assing it though.

Most connections are routed either to American infrastructure or are made so that they can be surveilled, let alone the majority of services and servers being under US jurisdiction anyway. I believe Europe should not rely on other continents, let alone an hostile entity such as the USA, but would also immediately jump on the Starlink train since I pay a stupid amount of money for 4mbps and will literally never see any cabled connection laid since upgrade plans have ignored mine and nearby households for few hundred meters. 4G routers can only do so much.

Perhaps during close approaches with earth when latency is lowest they'd open up the net to average people to grab whatever they want. It really all depends on how many big relay sats SpaceX wants to put up. If you're specifically talking about planning missions within KSP, just use a delta-v map and the in game delta-v calculators. Once you git gud then you can potentially start to do the math and fine tune really tight margins on your missions, but if you're just getting a feel for things there's really no benefit to getting bogged down. I think only a small portion of right wingers actually dislike electric cars or solar panels, they just hate it being shoved down their throat as a requirement to save the human race. Then find those ingredients in space and use them. There isn't anything special about Earth silicates. Since space farming would most likely be done in micro-g or low-g hydroponics, the "soil" doesn't have to be exactly like Earth soil. Just mechanically similar enough to "feel right" to people. Over time, the "soil" can be processed with organic waste such that a hardy grass can grow on it.

I don't think an insulin pump could get remotely accessed to subtlety alter your thoughts or feelings. I get their motivation for sticking with Bluetooth but I would honestly feel a whole lot better just having a fucking jack in the back of my head.

Also, more importantly than just hacking is the data collection on the server end. I know that a TOS can only do so much but they should be laying out some extremely concrete rules stating that you own the data, no one else up to and including government agents can access it without a warrant and it will be made as anonymous as possible. Same should already be in place for Tesla and it definitely isn't.
Even with those safeguards it would still be extremely sketchy, but the fact that they aren't really even addressing it worries me.

Rocket Lab just might be able to transition after the death of the small sat launcher industry. Northrop definitely has the capital and resources to move heavily into the orbital transfer vehicle market but they can't be cost competitive unless they partner with SpaceX for Starship launches. They seem too stubborn for that and it would help kill the rocketry side of their business which is probably an old space sacred cow. Airbus and Maxar also have plans for this area.

There are a few pure OTV companies similar to Momentus but they're private so they won't be talked about as much and may have a harder time getting funding. Looks like it's gearing up to be a very competitive space.

What will the history books say about SLS? Hell, even my shitty high school history book had a chapter on the space race and the apollo program. It talked in depth about the capabilities of the saturn v and von braun and stuff.
NASA is trying to sell SLS as a cheap, shuttle-derived rocket that will be able to lift more than any other rocket in the world. But by the time it arrives it will not have been cheap, it basically won’t be shuttle derived anymore due to all the redesigns, and it won’t be the heaviest lifting rocket by a large margin.

A small number of humans will create and merge with nascent AI in an effort to protect humanity at large from "pure" AI. They'll succeed at first but eventually war among themselves, and this war will be catastrophic (but not species-ending) for humanity. It ends with them leaving the solar system.
