Think you're describing something complex when actually what you're doing is very simple. Happens to me regularly in mathematics. I think I have some cool idea and later realize it's trivial because of his and this theorem.
There's also the anecdote, I think I saw it on math stackechange, can't be bothered to find it right now, of a guy who did his thesis on some kind of weird space. He came up with all these interesting properties that he could prove about them. Later he realized that the space is actually empty, or something like that. Total disappointment.
